My Review of Texas Hold’Em (Edited by George R. R. Martin)

A few weeks ago, I was in the library looking for a book to read and picked Texas Hold’Em up because I had previously read another book in the Wild Card series titled Low Chicago which I really enjoyed reading and I had seen this one quite a few times in stores. I only ended up reading the first six pages at the time but I later got it out from the library and have since read the entire thing, and I have to say that this is a genuinely good book and a very enjoyable book to read.
While I have read another book in the same series this book featured a completely different set of characters so it was quite interesting to read because it had characters that I loved and a few that I loved to hate. One of the characters I liked the most was Adesina who despite having no chapters in the book told from her point of view still had some good moments. Another character that I liked was LoriAnne from Louisiana who as it turned out was an Ace whose power was control over mosquitos and the ability to make hundreds of clones of them, I thought as power this was a very interesting and original one for a character to have. There were also the characters that served as the antagonists who were not the most well written but were good enough that they were the ones you love to hate.
I really enjoyed the plot of this book which was that a jazz band competition was being held in San Antonio, Texas and one of the bands attending were made up of Jokers and an Ace, and on top of this strange things happened at their hotel and the building where the competition was being held. Though this was maybe not the most original plot that was ever written (the overt discrimination against the Joker and Ace characters being a parallel to racism and discrimination in real life) it was still well paced and made interesting enough because of the chapters being told from the points of view of different characters. One of them was a private investigator which added elements of a detective novel which also made the plot interesting.

With the above things being said I would give this book an 8 out of 10 because it was one of those books that I could sit and read for hours on end without getting bored or wanting to put the book down. It is also one of those books that though they are part of a series are written well enough that one needn’t have read any of the previous books in the series for the plot to make sense and be enjoyable. I would recommend this book to someone looking for a book that is a bit different to take on holiday or to someone who is looking to get kids interested in reading.
